Bandhani
Fall 2023Bandhani Arabi is a collaborative type project by TypeCraft Initiative
and TypeAraby. Developed through a 10-day workshop in Bhuj, India
(December 2023), the project explores the use of traditional Bandhani
tie-dye to form Arabic letterforms. The resulting designs are being
digitized into a typeface that brings together South Asian craft practices
and the calligraphic traditions of Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu. The typeface
is co-created with a community of Bandhani craftswomen, with the final
release forthcoming.
