Bandhani
& Type
Fall 2023
In this collaboration between TypeCraft and TypeAraby, I traveled
to Bhuj, India, and assisted in conducting a 10-day workshop with
craftswomen who specialize in traditional Bandhani tie-dye. The aim
of the project is to utilize the tie-dye technique to create Arabic
letterforms, which I , along with the rest of the team, are currently
digitizing to develop a typeface that honors this traditional practice.

Bandhani is a traditional Indian tie-dye technique where fabric is tied with thread before dyeing, creating intricate dotted patterns. Originating in Gujarat and Rajasthan, it's commonly used in traditional clothing like sarees and turbans, showcasing rich textile traditions.
