Layered
Spring 2025
A Visual Exploration of an Expat's Experience
This project draws on my expatriate experience in Qatar,
where living between tradition and modernity shaped my
understanding of the local cultural landscape. I became
aware of its layered nature—some aspects immediately
visible, others subtle and concealed.
I translated these observations into a material narrative
using glass, engraved wood, and a metal rod. Glass
represents moments of openness and clarity, engraved wood
reflects hidden traditions and cultural nuance, and the
metal rod symbolizes Qatar’s rapidly evolving, industrial
cityscape. Together, these materials invite viewers to
reflect on visibility and concealment within Qatari
culture from an expatriate perspective.
